INTERESTED IN BECOMING A MEMBER?

CLASSES OF MEMBERSHIP

Ordinary Members

To be eligible to apply for membership as an ordinary member, you must:

  1. Hold a current practising certificate issued by Queensland Law Society (QLS), or otherwise

  2. Be admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland.

 

An ordinary member:

  1. Has full voting rights in association matters; and

  2. May sit on the Management Committee.

 

Associate Members

To be eligible to apply for membership as an associate member, a person must at the time of lodging their application:

  1. Have a current enrolment in a post-graduate course (PLT) and be employed by a law firm, barrister or as an associate to a member of the judiciary; or

  2. Be engaged in the QLS Supervised Traineeship program; or

  3. Not be the holder of a current Queensland practising certificate, but be eligible to obtain a practising certificate in accordance with the requirements under the Legal Profession Act 2007 (Qld) or any subsequent equivalent legislation; or

  4. Member of the judiciary or a government tribunal, or other quasi-judicial body at the discretion of the Management Committee; or

  5. Registrars of any Court in Queensland; or

  6. Current full time or sessional teaching staff of a higher education provider, in the area of law.

 

An associate member:

  1. Has no voting rights at a General Meeting; and

  2. May be a member of the General Management Committee and vote at General Management Committee meetings.

 

 

Student Member

 To be eligible to apply for membership as a student member, a person must at the time of lodging their application:

  1. Be a student enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws or a dual degree which includes a Bachelor of Laws; or

  2. Be a student enrolled in a Juris Doctor.

 

A Student Member

  1. Has no voting rights; and

  2. Is not eligible to be a member of the General Management Committee.

 

Counsel Members

To be eligible to apply for membership as a Counsel member, a person must hold a current practising certificate issued by the Bar Association of Queensland.

 

A Counsel member:

  1. Has no voting rights; and

  2. Is not eligible to be a member of the General Management Committee.

Life Members and Honorary Members

The General Management Committee may, in its discretion, confer membership in accordance with the following sub-clauses:

  1. Life Membership – to persons who are honoured for long and meritorious service to the Association and;

    1. is perennial and does not require annual renewal;

    2. does not carry annual membership fees; and

    3. does not confer voting rights. 

  2. Honorary Membership – to persons whom the General Management Committee recognise as a person who is not eligible for an ordinary membership but who is of significant standing within the legal profession or the community at large and:

    1. is given for a period of one year and is subject to annual review;

    2. does not carry annual membership fees; and

    3. does not confer voting rights.
